Bernadette the Barred Owl!

STORY RECAP.

First two eggs laid before March 4. Third egg laid just after that.

On March 23rd, she separated one of the eggs from the clutch. See the video here: https://youtu.be/E_b7hggeA8g

Two days later, that lone egg fell out of the chimney, rolled down the roof and landed on the ground below. This is what we found on the ground: https://youtu.be/drIi8j6JhTQ

First owlet hatched April 1. 2nd owlet hatched one day later.

On April 4th, one of the two owlets tragically fell out of the nest. We never found it, but Bernadette did, and brought the body back to the nest. See the fall here: https://youtu.be/tQQG0o9vvck?si=6NhIPtFl8OtWXrkK&t=1003

Then, the other owlet also fell out ---twice in six hours! We returned it to the nest. https://youtu.be/o0PMahDYEkE

Two weeks later, the lone survivor (which we dubbed "Mini B") just did not seem to be developing normally.

On April 18, we removed Mini B from the nest and examined them. See the video here [WARNING: MAY BE DIFFICULT TO WATCH]: https://youtu.be/o88Y7LPOC_E

We then took it to Animal Emergency Hospital & Urgent Care for transport to The American Wildlife Refuge.

The vets at the hospital determined the lone surviving owlet was actually born with two malformed legs. It was a birth defect. As a result, and in accordance to federal law, the owlet was euthanized.

This experience was new to us. We feel fortunate that Bernadette chose our chimney (again) for her nest. We appreciate those of you who posted helpful comments.

Barred owls typically hatch between late March and April, with a peak around early April. Eggs are laid in early spring (often starting in March), and incubation lasts 28 to 33 days. The owlets are born covered in white down, with their eyes closed, and leave the nest roughly 4–5 weeks later.

We are in Raleigh, NC.

A barred owl has returned to nest on top of our chimney—just like last year—but this time we installed a full nest cam to capture every moment! In this video, you’ll see the owl settling in with two freshly laid eggs, reacting to the camera, and preparing her unusual rooftop nest. We’re hoping to stream the nest live soon, but we need a few more subscribers to unlock streaming, so join us as we follow this incredible barred owl family from egg to hatchling. Subscribe to help us go LIVE and follow the journey!

Hi! I’m Sun, and I’m an avid gardener (Master Gardener Intern). I’m also a beekeeper! I’m a little camera shy, so you won’t see a lot of me talking into the camera. I’m not an expert, but I do try to impart some of the knowledge I’ve gained through practical experience: getting my hands dirty in good, rich soil!
