Husqvarna® 357xp BB vs Stihl® ms500i
Filmed early March, 2020.
A nice little treat of having two of Dave's saws at the same time. Contrary to my "smarty" mouth, I relinquished both of his mo-chines. It was without a fight, lol.
My first go round with a 500i. It is bone stock except for the enlarged exhaust outlet hole in the muffler. Seemed like it had decent lowend power. With the spring mounts, it definitely runs smooth.
The "Little Saw" that could is a 357xp with a BigBore kit I made back ~ 2004/5. The previous video shows this saw with the same bar & chain around two weeks earlier. The 357 is zipped, modded, ported. It is at the Psy-Ko level with my "patented" "Torque Tweak" added into the mix. It started life at 57cc. It is now 61.5cc.
As stated, I did not think that the 357 was going to win. I was hoping that it did not embarrass itself. Based on the timed runs, I think that is the case. When looking at this aspect, I can take two saws of the same make, model, & displacement, zipp one, and get it to go 3/4 seconds faster than the stock version. Here we are comparing a 357xp, upsized to 61.5 cc, that is rated at 4.4hp in stock trim to the latest in technology 500i, displacing 79.2cc and rated at 6.8 hp.
I will note that there is more chatter in this session with the 357. That is because the chain was used a little bit from the last test run and the temperature had been a little colder - so the log is more solid.
If memory serves, Oregon .375 pitch, semi skip, chisel chain on an Oregon lw 28" bar.
Looking at the timed runs:
357xp BB at 13,560 15.10 down, 15.77 down, 14.76 up
500i at 13,380 12.34 down, 10.82 up, 11.34 up
I am well pleased that 357 which is down 2.4 in stock form was able to put in a good performance and not get blown completely out of the water.
With any luck, Dave will let us all know what he thinks about the "Little Saw" that could.
I'm currently available for custom saw modifications. Please shoot me an email if you are interested.
