Mental Health & Aging with a Spinal Cord Injury | Paralysis & Emotional Health | Wallace Upper

In today’s video, we discuss mental health and aging with a spinal cord injury, paralysis and emotional health. Wallace Upper is sharing a snapshot of his story, discussing the issue of aging and mental health for people with spinal cord injury.

For people with a spinal cord injury, we know that longevity and life expectancy has improved. But as people with SCI get later on in life, they more are likely than people without spinal cord injuries to experience subtle or significant changes in their physical abilities and overall health, as SCI tends to somewhat intensify the typical process of aging. Of course, the process of aging affects all of us, because it’s a part of the cycle of life that none of us are immune to. Unfortunately, a spinal cord injury often tends to accelerate the aging process, which is why it's important for people with SCI to focus on managing and maintaining a general healthy lifestyle as you get older. This not only benefits aging and physical health, but mental and emotional health as well.
