The four astronauts of the Artemis II mission—Jeremy Hansen of Canada, Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch—have returned to Houston, Texas, following their ten-day lunar flyby. The crew safely splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on April 25th and underwent initial recovery assessments. This mission marked the first crewed flight of NASA’s Artemis program, testing critical systems for future lunar landings. Hansen is the first Canadian to participate in such a mission. The Artemis II flight did not land on the moon, but successfully orbited it, reaching a maximum distance of 343,000 kilometers from Earth. The mission’s success paves the way for Artemis III, planned to land astronauts near the lunar south pole in 2026. NASA continues to analyze data collected during the flight to refine plans for subsequent missions aimed at establishing a sustained human presence on the moon.
