Freediving with the Moken - Freedive UK & Project Moken
In February 2014, Ian Donald, Freedive UK and Project Moken took a group of western freedivers, by invitation, to live and freedive with the last remaining tribe of Moken sea nomads in Thailand. A tribe who's freediving history and skills date back thousands of years, and are able to dive up to 30m deep with no fins, masks or weight. A freediving history so long that they are genetically pre-disposed to apnea.
The objective of the trip was to learn more about the problems that the Moken face in the modern world, to help them re-engage with their freediving heritage and to learn about the techniques that they use as freedivers.
This is the story of that trip.
Narrated by Ian Donald
Music by Polly Billam
If you would like to help the Moken, spread this message, visit the Surin islands and employ the Moken directly as guides, watch the film 'No word for worry' by project Moken and keep an eye on any initiatives that Freedive UK or Project Moken start.
The Moken can only hold on to their heritage if they are allowed the freedoms that are due to them and without public awareness that freedom will continually be eroded.
Thanks to www.projectmoken.com, Runar, Tanit, Hook, Ngui, Jip, Mon, Deng, Pon, Emily, Rich, Lissie, Henrik, Anna and everyone who came on the trip and all those who donated equipment to the cause.
Please note, all translations in the film were conducted live onsite via a Thai translator, therefore please excuse if there are any in-inaccuracies in the exact translation.
All footage other than the archive tsunami footage is original footage by Freedive UK and their guests. Tsunami footage (unknown author) used under fair usage policy for short media clips used as part of an educational video, with factual original commentary.
