Where does evil come from? Who — or what — is Satan? And why do we suffer?

In this week’s Sermon on the Peak, I trace the origin of these beliefs from the Old Testament through the New Testament, following how the devil evolves across scripture, through Jesus’s own encounters with darkness, and into the theology most of us inherited — much of which turns out to be wrong IMHO.

Drawing on the Bible, Dante’s Inferno, modern works like the Dungeon Crawl Carol audiobook series, and nondual philosophy, I argue that evil and suffering are not punishments — they are invitations. Every moment of pain is an opportunity to respond with love, compassion, and presence.

This sermon was recorded live atop Torn Mountain Monument in upstate New York, where each rock honors a fallen soldier or first responder — many of them brothers and sisters I knew personally. As a retired Army combat veteran with combat deployments, West Point graduate, psychedelic chaplain, and founder of HeartSpace Church, this ground is sacred to me in more ways than one.
