How to Disassemble a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) — Step by Step Tutorial
Complete hard disk disassembly and repair guide – see inside HDD platters, heads, motor, and PCB.
In this video, I show you a full hard disk disassembly and step-by-step repair tutorial. You will learn how to open a hard disk drive safely, identify all internal parts, and troubleshoot common issues like a stuck head, not spinning, or clicking sound.
🔧 What you'll learn in this HDD teardown:
- How to open a hard disk without damaging platters
- Hard disk internal parts – platters, read/write heads, actuator arm, spindle motor, rare earth magnets, PCB
- How to remove hard disk head assembly safely
- How to free a stuck hard disk motor
- How to diagnose a hard disk by looking inside
- Tools needed – Torx screwdrivers (T6, T7, T8), tweezers, head combs, ESD-safe workspace
⚠️ CRITICAL WARNINGS (Read before attempting):
- Hard disks are extremely sensitive to dust – one speck can ruin platters permanently
- Opening a hard disk voids the warranty and usually destroys professional data recovery chances
- NEVER touch platters with bare fingers – skin oils damage the magnetic surface
- Work in a clean, dust-free area if possible
- This video is for educational purposes, donor part recovery, and dead drive inspection only
📌 Compatible hard disk models:
Seagate, Western Digital (WD), Toshiba, Hitachi, Samsung, Fujitsu, HP, Dell, Lenovo – most 2.5" laptop HDD and 3.5" desktop SATA hard drives
🔍 Common problems you can identify from disassembly:
- Stuck read/write heads (heads parked on platters)
- Spindle motor seized (platters won't spin)
- Damaged or scratched platters (visible circular scratches)
- Burnt PCB (visible burn marks or blown components)
- Loose or broken actuator arm
