Fatty liver is a life style illness, treatment includes weight reduction, exercise, dietery changes and medications. Fatty liver is also known as non alcoholic fatty liver disease, untreated fatty liver can lead to cirrhosis.
Non alcoholic fatty liver disease has 3 stages: Fatty liver, non alcoholic steatohepatitis and cirrhosis.
3 stages of fatty liver or NAFLD are.
1. Fatty liver.
2. Non alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).
3. Liver #cirrhosis.

Causes of non alcoholic Fatty liver
1. Obesity: Visceral or central obesity is the most common cause of fatty liver. Central obesity leads to insulin resistance, and diabetes mellitus. Central fat releases fatty acid which are deposited in liver.
2.Diabetes mellitus: Patients with diabetes are more prone and can have more severe fatty liver.
3.Dyslipidemia: High cholesterol and triglyceride can lead to fatty liver.
4. Metabolic Syndrome

Diagnosis: Alcohol consumption should be less than 20 gm/day.

Diagnosis
1. Blood test
2. Ultrasonography
3. CT scan
4. MRI
5. Fibroscan with CAP
USG, MRI and CAP test shows liver fat. CAP test can quantify FAT, its non invasive test, and is like ultrasonography.
If platelet count is decreases, SGOT, SGPT are increased, it means advanced disease.
FIbroscan gives information about the liver fibrosis, high value indicate advanced disease.
Symptoms
1. Right side abdomen pain
2. Tiredness
3. Symptoms of cirrhosis: Blood in vomiting, black stool, liver cancer, fluid in stomach (#ascites)
Treatment
1. weight loss with dietery counselling, some times endoscopy procedure and surgery are advised for weight reduction.
2. Sugar level control
3. Exercise
4. medications
