🏭India's Thermal Coal Imports decreased by 12.0% | ETSA Datahub

On the 18th of June 2026, India's thermal coal imports decreased by 12.0% on a year-on-year basis to a four-year low of 65.0 million tonnes during January 2026 to May 2026. The decline in imports was primarily driven by increased domestic output and higher renewable energy generation, in an effort to reduce India's reliance on imported coal.

In addition, imports were further pressured by higher imported coal prices and elevated freight rates amid the Middle East war. Furthermore, India's total power generation increased by 5.0% on a year-on-year basis during January 2026 and May 2026, while renewable generation increased by a significant 22.0% over the same period, with the country aiming to reduce the use of coal for power generation by at least 30.0% in 2026.
