The streets and bazaars of the Syrian capital Damascus began to bustle once again on Wednesday after the government said it had eased the COVID-19 lockdown on businesses across the country.

Shops and public markets have opened their doors after a hiatus of over one month following the start of the lockdown. The move comes several days after the beginning of Ramadan, an important period for Syrian retailers.

Shoppers were seen out and about at Souq Al Shalaan and Al-Hamidiyah Souq on Wednesday as vehicles packed the streets of the Syrian capital. Business hours are limited to between 8 am and 5 pm while shop owners are required to sterilise their premises. A night-time curfew meanwhile has been extended across the country.

Syria has so far recorded a total of 43 confirmed cases of coronavirus and three related deaths, according to data compiled by the Johns Hopkins University.
