Intoduction to Modern Rudimental Swing Solos by Charles Wilcoxon

Modern Rudimental Swing Solos by Charles Wilcoxon is one of the most influential texts for snare drumming ever created. The book has been used by countless percussionists to improve their technique, rhythmic vocabulary and musicality for almost 70 years (the first printing was in 1941). The text was very innovative for it's time creating a new rudimental language and phrasing style that changed the course of drumming. The book was a huge favorite of jazz drummers of the time including Max Roach, Jo Jones, Philly Joe Jones, Elvin Jones, Alan Dawson and Joe Morello. The techniques used in these solos can be heard on all of their recordings. The book also has been used intensively by many professional orchestra percussionists since the sticking combinations directly apply to many orchestral snare drum parts.
Personally I have used the book in my teaching practice for 40 years and my students have loved working on it since it is not only challenging but a hell of a lot of fun.
I have recorded the entire book here for you all, minus (for the moment) the drum set etudes which I will record at a later date. That adds up to 27 solos. I am playing them at reasonable tempos but you should feel free to play them slower (or faster, if you are able).
These are by no means definitive versions of these solos, just my interpretation, but hopefully it will give you a good idea of the sound and style of this masterpiece of a book.
