If we take a look from the year 1940 there has been 14 presidents, seven republicans and seven democrats, and we even endured world wars, there was nine eleven, the cuban missile crisis. And now the pandemic we are enduring now, and through all this, the best thing you could have done, would have been to purchase more stocks, not selling. Even though the outlook was incredibly weak.
Make sure to always ignore big headlines in the news, they are subconsciously making you worried, and impacting your decision making.
If you have done the right choices, it will be proven later.
The market returned 0 from 1966 to 1978, but 10 years later, it returned a total of 187%. Think about that for a second.
It would be easy to say, just invest in a broad index fund moving forward, but the times ahead are very uncertain and unpredictable. I believe that the technology sector will continue to grow, and that it is not in a bubble, because innovation is ultimately the only thing that is going to fix the problems, that arise in this world.
We need more people to focus on innovation and to have the courage to think different and dream of a new, better world.
I want to be optimistic for the future, that is why I will continue to invest through these uncertain times, because I want to believe in the good of humanity, and that no matter what happens, we will be able to solve it.
But I would be lying if I said that the stock market crash, that happened in Japan in 1990 is not making me scared. It has taken over 30 years for it to recover, If you invested at the high before the crash.
You would still not have recovered. That means, 30 years with no investment return.
This is why I always recommend the dollar cost averaging method. Always invest every month. So you will average out in the end, both buying the highs and the lows in the market.
The US market on the other hand, has been doing great and all you had to do, was to bet that the US would overcome the obstacles, and wars it was facing, and that it was going to end up on top. And that is very hard to do in difficult times.
So I would say this, if you really want to invest bad enough and dream of a better and richer future, invest and continue to do so and I hope that these uncertain times shall pass as well.
Picking individual stocks can be a better play, but it also comes with greater risk.
Investing is about reducing the risk, and maximising the rewards. I would like to be somewhere in-between, I am not interested in more risk. I am looking to diversify as much as possible for now, but in the future I might become a more concentrated investor. I will stick pick individual stocks, but it will not be more than 1% risk per set up.

So to give you a summary. I will continue investing, even if the market will crash. But I would be lying if I said I am not scared of the future, or thinking about the Japanese stock market crash that still has not fully recovered in 30 years. I know that fundamentally things are not the same, but it still bothers me. Wish you all the best.
