(Did you know that the greatest football player in history was once told he was too small to play?
Today, we will learn English by following the incredible journey of Lionel Messi—from a sick
young boy in Argentina to a world champion. Listen carefully, because this story might change
the way you look at your own dreams.
Once upon a time, in the sunny city of Rosario, Argentina, there lived a small boy named Lionel.
He lived in a humble house with his parents, his two older brothers, and his sister. In Rosario,
football was not just a game; it was a way of life. Every day, from morning until evening, Lionel
played on the dusty streets with his brothers and their friends. Even though the other boys were
much older and bigger, they could not catch him. His friends called him "Leo." He was fast, he
was smart, and he had a left foot that seemed to be made of gold. He could score goals that others
only dreamed of, weaving through defenders like they were statues.
But Leo had a secret challenge that no one could see. While his talent was growing, his body was
not. Doctors found a serious problem: his body did not have enough growth hormone. To grow
like other boys, he needed expensive medicine every single day. This was a dark time for the
family. Every night, tiny Leo had to sit on his bed and inject himself in the leg with this
medicine. Imagine being a young child and having to do that every day just to have a chance at a
normal life. It was difficult, it was painful, and it required incredible courage. His family worked
very hard, but they did not have enough money to pay for this expensive treatment for many
years.
During these tough years, Leo’s biggest supporter was his grandmother, Celia. She was the
woman who first took him to a local football field when he was only four years old. She saw the
magic in him before anyone else did. She used to tell the coaches, "Put him in, he will save the
game!" Sadly, she passed away when Leo was still very young. Leo was devastated, but he
remembered her words and her belief in him. This is why, even today, every time Messi scores a
goal, he looks up and points his fingers to the sky. It is a silent "thank you" to the woman who
believed in the small boy from Rosario.
Then, when things looked impossible, a miracle happened. The famous football club from Spain,
FC Barcelona, heard rumors about an amazing little boy in Argentina. Their scout, Charly
Rexach, traveled across the ocean to see him play. After just a few minutes, the scout was
shocked. He had never seen such talent in a thirteen-year-old. He knew he had to act fast. He
said, "We must sign this boy now! On any paper we can find!" Because they were at a restaurant
and had no official documents, Rexach took a simple paper napkin and wrote a contract on it.
That napkin changed football history forever.
At just thirteen years old, Leo had to make a heartbreaking decision. To save his career and get
his medicine, he had to leave his home, his friends, and most of his family to move to Spain. The
first few months in Barcelona were silent and lonely. Leo sat in the locker room, too shy to speak
to his teammates. He missed the streets of Rosario. But on the field, he was home. The club paid
for his medical treatment, and slowly, his body grew stronger. He spent thousands of hours
practicing, perfecting his dribbling, and learning the Barcelona way of playing.
