José Eduardo dos Santos: 2022 Documentary

In September of 1979, the Angolan ruling party, the MPLA, unanimously presented José Eduardo dos Santos as the new President of Angola, replacing President Agostinho Neto who had passed away. Dos Santos was just 37 years old at the time and so he became one of Africa’s youngest heads of state.

For almost four decades Jose dos Santos appeared to be Angola's eternal “comrade president” until he finally stepped down in September 2017 and along the way Dos Santos fought against the man considered to have been his archnemesis, Jonas Savimbi. This was during Angola’s Civil War.
Throughout his time in power, there were suspicions that dos Santos had used his position and influence to enrich his family through corruption.

Ever since then, the walls have been crumbling for the dos Santos clan as the regime of president Joao Lourenco has been a thorn in the side for Dos Santos and his family. In this episode of African Biographics, we cover the life story and legacy of Jose Eduardo Dos Santos, the former strongman of Angola.
