Episode 3: Small Town Detecting, Mechanical Dollar/1900 presidential election token #metaldetecting

Metal Detecting is my favorite social distancing activity! We are located in rural South Dakota. Today, I'm out on my own... revisiting an old permission that's not hunted out yet!

Mechanical Dollar, Presidential memorabilia from 1900.
Backed by wealthy interests, the Republicans spared no expense in giving Bryan and Free Silver a black eye. A classic ploy was this unique mechanical token/trinket, resembling a U.S. $20 gold piece, which shows what would happen if Bryan became president. Twisting the token in one direction shows a proud eagle and "I'm all right" at the top. The reverse in this case shows that on a gold standard the dollar is worth 100 cents. The bottom states "Mack and Teddy, Prosperity"

When you rotate the dollar the other direction, you then that it says "Free Silver, A Dollar is worth 50 cents" and on the reverse, the eagle is drooping and sad.

The 1900 United States presidential election was the 29th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 6, 1900.In a re-match of the 1896 race, Republican President William McKinley defeated his Democratic challenger, William Jennings Bryan. McKinley's victory made him the first president to win consecutive re-election since Ulysses S. Grant had accomplished the same feat in 1872.

Theodore Roosevelt was William McKinley's Vice-President. When McKinley was assassinated and died on 14 September 1901, Roosevelt was sworn in as President.
