Mexico in 60 Seconds: Ancient Ruins, Beach Towns, Street Tacos & Cities That Never Sleep
60 seconds of Mexico. A country where ancient civilisations, neon-lit cities, tropical beaches and some of the best food on earth all collide in one place. One moment you’re standing in front of pyramids older than most countries, the next you’re eating tacos on a plastic chair outside a street stall that somehow tastes better than anything in a restaurant.
Mexico City is the heavyweight. One of the biggest cities on the planet, packed with historic squares, sprawling markets, rooftop bars, and neighbourhoods like Roma and Condesa where cafés and street art sit side by side. Just outside the city, the ancient city of Teotihuacan rises with the Pyramid of the Sun and Moon, still dominating the landscape after centuries.
Head south and things slow down in Oaxaca, where colonial streets, artisan markets, and some of the country’s most iconic food scenes come together. This is mole, mezcal, and colour everywhere you look.
On the Pacific coast, Puerto Vallarta mixes beaches with jungle-covered mountains, while surfers and sunset chasers fill the Malecón every evening. Further north, Guadalajara brings mariachi music, tequila heritage, and a big-city feel without Mexico City’s chaos.
On the Caribbean side, the Yucatán Peninsula is a different world entirely. Cancún brings resort beaches and turquoise water, while just down the coast Tulum mixes jungle ruins, beach clubs, cenotes, and yoga retreats that feel very “postcard but make it boho”.
Then there are the ruins. Chichen Itza stands as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, with the Kukulkan pyramid perfectly aligned to the sun during equinoxes. Across the country you’ll also find jungle-covered ruins, desert landscapes, and ancient cities that predate modern borders by thousands of years.
Food is basically a national event. Tacos al pastor spinning on vertical spits, tamales wrapped in corn husks, fresh ceviche by the coast, and street corn covered in lime, chilli, and cheese. You can eat incredibly well for just a few pounds without even trying.
Mexico stretches across nearly 2 million square kilometres, with climates ranging from deserts to tropical jungle to high-altitude cities. It’s one of those places where every region feels like a different country entirely.
