Building a shaker cabinet and doors with pocket hole joinery

A friend of mine who owns a non-profit asked me to build a small wall hung utility cabinet for one of her classrooms to hold cleaning supplies. It didn't need to be very deep as would be the case for a kitchen cabinet.

With the exception of the door panels, where I used 1/4" plywood, I used 3/4" Poplar. The cabinet measured 30" wide and 24" high.

Since I built this cabinet with Poplar it was important to keep the grain running in the same direction for the entire box so as the wood moves, the top, bottom and side will move in unison. As an alternative, plywood could be used for the top, bottom and sides.

Since the cabinet wasn't very deep, i chose to use solid wood, but if it were deeper, I would have used plywood.

Since it was a utility cabinet, I used a relatively easy method to set the panels in the doors which required only a rabbit router bit and setting the panel in the resulting inset.

I used Kreg Pocket Screws to fasten the case parts as well as the door frames and the Kreg Hinge Jig really made setting the hinges a relatively easy task. I kept the pocket holes out of site and to hide them even further, I used pocket hole plugs.

Here are a list of the supplies and tools and supplies I used:
