Rome’s Greatest Emperor Wasn’t Born in Rome

Constantine the Great was not born in the imperial palace of the old capital.

He was born in Naissus — today’s Niš, Serbia.

From a provincial Roman city came the man who would rise to the top of the Roman Empire, transform the empire’s relationship with Christianity, and leave a legacy that shaped European history.

His story begins in the age of the Tetrarchy, in the world of Diocletian’s imperial order, military power, political alliances, and a struggling empire.

This is the first story in our series about Constantine the Great — the emperor born in Niš.
