The world of The Last of Us has been drastically changed by the outbreak of a fungal infection caused by the Cordyceps virus, which has decimated the population and drastically altered the environment.

The remaining humans have been forced to live in small settlements, often in abandoned buildings, or in larger cities which have been fortified and guarded against the infected. The world has become a dangerous place filled with both human survivors and the infected, who roam the land in search of food and shelter.

The survivors of the infection have had to learn to survive in an increasingly hostile world, relying on each other for strength and protection. Resources are scarce, and the survivors are often forced to scavenge for food, medicine, and other supplies from abandoned buildings and vehicles.

The survivors have also had to learn to protect themselves from the infected, as well as other survivors who may pose a threat. In addition, some survivors have formed groups in order to better their chances of survival. These groups often clash with one another, as each group strives to gain control of the resources they need to survive.
