Converter Lockup Diagnosis: Subaru TR580

Subaru TR580 Converter Lockup Diagnosis/Repair*
Normally, when a Subaru transmission exhibits a lockup condition while driving and sets a diagnostic code such as P2763, it is an indication that there may be an issue with a lockup solenoid. At that point most of the time, the vehicle will be put on a lift in order to drop the pan to check out the TCC system. Most of the time, but not always as is the case of the Lineartronic TR580 CVT which has the valve body located on top of the transmission instead of the bottom.

To gain access to the valve body requires removal of certain interior items along with harness brackets and wires bolted to the transmission top cover. Once done the top cover can be removed along with the valve body. Before disassembly however, TCC solenoid resistance can be easily check.
One problem currently though is solenoid availability. The OE dealer will only sell a complete valve body and beyond that the TCC solenoid appears to be hardwired to the other solenoids. It does require a little extra effort however, it can be replaced. Before pricing a job be aware of the circumstances and availability.

Note: If a Subaru arrives at the shop with a possible bearing noise and is equipped with a TR580 the cause may be a bad drive pulley front bearing. If so, bearing availability may be limited and it is not available from OE.

*This repair does not require lifting the vehicle
