✓ Also my Sister-in-Law (Bhabhi) shows us how to make an authentic Gujarati Kadhi (a yogurt based gravy / soup) which is usually poured over plain boiled rice).

POTATO AND PEAS CURRY RECIPE, INGREDIENTS REQUIRED:
* Vegetable Oil (Tel).
* Boiled Potatoes cut into chunks (Bateta)
* Peas (Vatana) pre-boiled.
* Chopped Tomato (Tamata).
* Mustard Seeds (Rye).
* Asafoetida (Hing).
* Homemade Garam Masala (mixed Spice Blend).
* Turmeric (Haldi).
* Salt (Namak).
* Water (Pani).
* Optional to make it hotter: Red Chilli Powder (Lal Mirchu).
Garnished with:
* Chopped Green Coriander (Lila Dhana).

PLAIN BOILED RICE RECIPE INGREDIENTS REQUIRED:
* Basmati Long Grain Rice (Bhaat).
* Ghee (Clarified Butter).
* Salt (Namak).
* Water (Pani).

GUJARATI KADHI RECIPE INGREDIENTS REQUIRED
* Chickpea Flour (Besan) mixed with boiled water.
* Yogurt (Dahi).
* Green Chilli Paste (Finely Chopped mix of Green Chilies, Garlic, Ginger and Salt).
* Sugar (Sarkar).
* Salt (Namak).
* Turmeric (Haldi).
* Cumin Seeds (Jeera).
* Clove (Laving).
* Cinnamon (Taj).
* Curry Leaves.
* Ghee (Clarified Butter).
* Green Coriander (Lila Dhana).

This is not restaurant cooking or even street food but is tradition home cooked food which is popular in the Indian state of Gujarat.

As you see, the room is really small, but did you also notice how small the actual kitchen worktop is?

My Aunty (Masi) lives in a one bedroom self contained flat in South Bombay, she has lived here for 55 years.
Apart from the outside communal toilets, every single aspect of living is done in this one bedroom flat, be it the:
* Morning bathing - with a bucket bath.
* Brushing teeth
* Prayers
* Cooking.
* Eating breakfast, lunch or dinner.
* Washing clothes
* Washing up of cutlery
* Ironing
* Working from home (sewing)
* Watching TV
* Socializing
* Storage of clothes, dry foods, work materials
* Storing of cooking & eating utensils such as pots, pans & plates
* Space for a fridge / freezer
* Space for a sewing machine
* Space for a wardrobe
* Sleeping & all the required bedding.

What makes it even more astonishing is that the actual room is quite tiny in itself. This is tiny house living and a reality for a large proportion of Mumbaiites.

Having visited her again in 2012 & 2017 I was even more humbled when I met my Masi and saw her flat again largely because of my maturity and life experiences here in the U.K.

Masi's apartment flat is in the Mazgaon district of Mumbai.

(Note: the tiny house movement is gaining much popularity in USA).

I feel that my Aunty has had a hard life; in that she lost her husband at an young age and then her son passed away several years ago. (The son was the breadwinner in the family).

My Aunty and her daughter-in-law now carry out some low paid sewing machine work from the flat.

I humble myself when I think of my Aunty
