Deadly start to 2026 sparks warning to motorcyclists.

So far this year, 11 motorcyclists have lost their lives on South Australian roads. All were men, with eight deaths linked to dangerous riding or excessive speed, and the majority occurring in regional areas.

The consequences of risky riding are all too real for families like that of 19-year-old Nathan Anderson, who died in a motorcycle crash in 2024.

Nathan lost control of his motorcycle after braking suddenly and collided with a roadside guard rail. His parents, Stuart and Andrea, have since donated his motorcycle to the SA Police Road Safety Centre to educate other riders.

“His crash has forever changed our lives, and our family will forever have a part of us missing,” his family said.

Nathan’s sister, Abigail, has also stepped forward in a powerful way by becoming a SAPOL Road Safety Ambassador to honour her brother and advocate for safer riding choices among young people.

“I miss my little brother more than worlds can describe. If even a single person can learn from the story my family and I share and take a lesson home with them, then it’s not a story told in vain,” Abigail said.

“Nathan’s crash was the cause of simple inexperience and a lack of knowledge, only 2 weeks short from his 20th birthday.

“We urge all riders to adhere to their own capabilities and learn their limitations, as nobody deserves to have their journey cut short while they’re just finding their feet.”

Assistant Commissioner Ian Parrott said stories like Nathan’s highlight just how vulnerable motorcyclists are on the road.

"Motorcyclists face a significantly higher risk of death compared to other road users when measured against distance travelled,” Assistant Commissioner Parrott said.

SAPOL has relaunched its motorcycle safety campaign ‘Love Riding? Back Off’ from 26 April to 24 May. The campaign targets male riders aged 20–29, who are overrepresented in serious crashes.

“So far this year South Australia has recorded 43 lives lost and 327 serious injuries between January and May 2026, this equates to hundreds of lives being changed forever due to bad choices on our roads.”

SAPOL is urging all motorcyclists to take responsibility for their safety and the safety of others.If you love riding, back off the throttle.
