This is the story of the Black female mathematicians — the human computers — whose trajectory calculations, re-entry angle mathematics, and orbital mechanics made every successful American space mission of the 1950s and 1960s possible. Women who were required to use separate bathrooms, sit in separate sections, and enter through separate doors — while doing calculations that the fate of human lives literally depended on.
