What techniques did El Greco use to create his paintings?

In this short video, I explore some of the techniques that El Greco employed to create his paintings. El Greco's paintings exhibit a variety of techniques. He often employed a thin gesso layer as a primer, followed by an oil ground composed mainly of earth pigments, along with azurite, carbon black, and lead pigments. His works also feature elongated, stylized forms, vibrant color palettes, and expressive brushwork. Additionally, he sometimes wiped his brush clean on the edges of the canvas, a technique later adopted by other artists. El Greco's use of dynamic, fluid brushstrokes and layered colors contributes to the unique, dramatic quality of his artwork.
