Derby County –v- Liverpool
League Game
09/09/89
---- ---- ---- ----
Having just missed out on the League title in 1988/89 by the narrowest margin to Arsenal, Liverpool began the 1989/90 season determined to reclaim their crown.
They’d already began the season by defeating Arsenal in the Charity Shield, and then followed that up with a win over Manchester City on the opening day of the League season, before drawing at Aston Villa and Luton Town, both matches where they were very unfortunate not to win.
They were about to engage in a spell of rampant form which would see them rattle in 22 goals in their next 6 matches. That run began with a trip to Derby County at the baseball ground. The game ended 3-0 with goals from Ian Rush, a pen from John Barnes, and the third from Peter Beardsley, who also struck the woodwork twice during the game.
The full Liverpool line-up, managed by Kenny Dalglish, included Bruce Grobbelaar, Alan Hansen, Glenn Hysen, David Burrows, Gary Gillespie, Steve Nicol, Ronnie Whelan, Steve McMahon, John Barnes, Peter Beardsley and Ian Rush.
The Derby line-up, managed by Arthur Cox, included Peter Shilton, Paul Blades, Mike Forsyth, Geraint Williams, Mark Wright, Rob Hindmarch, Ted McMinn, Dean Saunders, Paul Goddard, Trevor Hebberd, Gary Micklewhite and substitute Nick Pickering. Both Wright and Saunders would make the switch from Derby to Liverpool 2 seasons later when Graeme Souness took over as manager.
Liverpool went on to win the League for the 18th time in 1989/90 (at the time an English record), and they weren’t a million miles away from making it a double, with a narrow 4-3 defeat to Crystal Palace denying them a place in what would have been their 4th FA Cup final in 5 seasons, having already appeared in the 1986, 1988, and 1989 finals at Wembley.
