China sees a rise in its defense budget in 2021. The increased expenditure is for China to better defend its national sovereignty and to meets its international commitments like peacekeeping. Diplomacy and national defense always go hand in hand. Across the Pacific, the newly confirmed U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken has described the China-U.S. relationship as competitive when it should be, collaborative when it can be, and adversarial when it must be. I speak to Senior Colonel Zhou Bo, senior fellow at the Centre for International Security and Strategy at Tsinghua University; and Ryan Hass, senior fellow at the Brookings Institute, who served as director for China at the National Security Council from 2013 to 2017, to find out more.
