Frank identifies some genes that have been shown to regulate lifespans of laboratory animals such as the fruit fly and the round worm Caenorhabditis elegans, as well as in ordinary brewer's yeast. In discussing the problem of how the hundreds of genes now known to regulate lifespan operate, he introduces the concept of "General Systems Theory," and illustrates it with the logically equivalent problem of "Who burnt Giordano Bruno at the stake?" One gene is known that when appropriately mutated can increase the lifespan of a round worm ten-fold. Applied to humans, that would increase lifespan to over 700 years!
