Second mayor of Hamburg Katharina Fegebank joined Jewish representatives to visit the synagogue in Hamburg's Hohe Weide on Monday, after an anti-Semitic attack against a Jewish student on Sunday afternoon.

"I'm really deeply shocked that a Jewish student was attacked right here, especially since it happened on Feast of Tabernacles. We remembered that exactly a year ago we were here, after the attack in Halle happened," Fegebank said. "We are of course all still shocked and stunned that what happened yesterday is happening again. It's not an isolated case, it's a problem that is deeply rooted in society," she added.

Flower bouquets were laid with lit candles on the spot where the attack happened, with a note reading "Never again. We people from Hamburg, are by your side, Marcos 05.10.2020."

The 29-year-old German suspect who was reportedly dressed in military clothing, inflicted a serious injury in the head of a Jewish student during the student celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles Jewish celebration before security forces guarding the synagogue managed to arrest him.

The event rated as attempted murder with an anti-semitic background brings back memories of the synagogue attack in Halle a year ago, when two people died during Yom Kippur celebrations.
