The Simple Past Tense
This is the basic past tense.
In The Simple Past Tense, we use to refer about the action that completed in past time.
The Simple Past Tense is also used to talk about past habits, facts, incidents and the person we are talking about is dead.
To make The Simple Past Tense we use 2nd form of the verb, but in the negative or interrogative we use 'did' (2nd form of ‘do’) + 1st form of main verb.
Example-
He played cricket.
Did he play cricket?
He did not play cricket.

The structure to make The Simple Past Tense.
1. Interrogative sentence –
Did + subject + main verb + object.
Did you clean the room?

2. Affirmative sentence –
Subject + 2nd form of verb + object.
I cleaned the room.

3. Negative sentence –
Subject + did + not + main verb + object.
I did not clean the room.

Some more examples to understand
Did you eat breakfast?
I did not eat breakfast.
I ate breakfast.
Did he play the violin?
He played the violin.
He did not play the violin.

Some examples of time duration.
He lived in Delhi for three years.
I went to cinema last month.
She worked in this office for ten years.
