Van Halen - Eyes of the Night (Dec. 1976)

We all know Van Halen rules, but have you ever wondered what their albums might have sounded like if they were able to record a few of them during their club days? While we’ll never know the answer to that question, I’ve attempted to do the next best thing and compiled a series of fantasy releases covering the group’s formative years.

These albums will hopefully serve as both a road map for the casual fan who’d like to learn more about the group’s history, as well as a scholarly resource for the VH die-hard, covering the most notable of their early, unreleased recordings in the best available quality.

To kick things off here’s the first album, which I’ve titled ‘Vanhalen’. This release covers the period from Fall of 1973 when Mark Stone was still on bass, to their January 1976 Hound Dog Studios session. Here we can see that the group has already developed serious chops and killer songs, even in their nascent state.
