"Dive" was written in 1989 and is credited to both Kurt and Krist. The first studio recording of "Dive" was made in the spring of 1989 at Audio Studio of the Evergreen College, Olympia. It was the only studio session with Jason Everman on guitar. It was produced by Greg Babior, a student who needed to do some tracks for a class project. Nirvana, in turn, were happy to have some free time in a professional studio. Also, Babior played in the band Lush and shared the bill with Nirvana often; later he will be one of the founders of Earth, the great drone band, not the planet.

The band was drunk on red wine. They recorded cover of a Kiss song "Do You Love Me?" released on "Hard To Believe: A Kiss Covers Compilation". Nirvana didn' put too much thought or effort into this, just had some fun. "Dive" was a different case, according to Babior. They were serious about it. Jason couldn't learn what the key it was in and had problems with playing solo.

This version was released on "With The Lights Out".

Another recorded performance was in November 1989 in the Netherlands for the nation-wide radio station, VPRO. They also played "About A Girl" and "Love Buzz".

The final version of "Dive" was recorded at Smart Studio in April 1990 with Butch Vig. That's the one from "Incesticide" and the one I use on the video. They were supposed to record a second album or an EP for Sub Pop to release it in September. But Chad soon left the band, so Kurt and Krist decided not to use the tape for an official release. Instead, they gave it out to music industry insiders and used it as a demo to get a deal with a major.

The first live performance of "Dive" happened in May 1989, the last time song was played on stage in October 1993.
