Bougainville Attorney General Hits back on PNG PM on Independence, Economy & Weapons

Attorney General and Minister for Independence Mission Implementation, Hon. Ezikiel Masatt, outlined Bougainville’s firm position on economic sovereignty and weapons management amid the ongoing independence process.

Responding to recent concerns raised by PNG Prime Minister James Marape, Masatt reaffirmed that while uncontained weapons remain a law-and-order issue, they do not threaten Bougainville’s daily life or democratic institutions, unlike in other parts of Papua New Guinea. He emphasized that this assessment was confirmed by the United Nations ahead of the 2019 referendum.

On the economic front, Masatt pointed to the ongoing dispute over Tuna revenue-sharing with the PNG government. He underscored that Bougainville’s economic future is intrinsically linked to its sovereignty, stating that true economic progress is unattainable without full political independence.
