FLYING IN THE UAE

Visiting Dubai is an experience. But with more than 30% of the UAE's domestic product tied to aviation, you'd think it would be easier to find a plane and go flying.

It turned into quite the adventure. Flying in the Middle East is hard.

I rented a car. (Just as easy as renting a car here in the US. Heck, I used Thrifty!) And then drove across the Arabian peninsula from Dubai to Fujairah to visit the Fujairah Aviation Academy. They graciously showed me around, but there's no airplane rental.

They pointed me in the direction of Jazirah Aviation Club. It's actually a bit over an hour up the coast from Dubai, in Al Jazirah Al Hamra, in Ras al-Khaimah.

There I was able to get to the controls of an Aeroprakt LSA with an instructor, and take a quick tour down the coast of the Persian Gulf.
