Dr. Hofstetter explains this is official school policy for paying their salaries for over a decade, and adds Howard, a federal employee on loan from NASA, can be named on the patent but gets no ownership share. They find they cannot file the patent privately, as the university claims all work created by its staff. Leonard suggests he and Sheldon split their own cut to divide total earnings equally three ways, which Howard agrees to. They decide to draw up a partnership contract written by Sheldon. Worried about Sheldon’s constant mocking, Howard asks for a clause banning such teasing, and Sheldon claims his personal ethics will keep him in line.
