1. Always be interested
He holds a bachelor's degree in mathematical sciences and an MBA from Stanford.

2. First who, then what
He worked for 18 months as a consultant with McKinsey & Company.

3. Have strong values
He worked as a product manager for Hewlett-Packard.

4. Persevere
He began his teaching career on the faculty at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business.

5. Be disciplined
He received the Distinguished Teaching Award in 1992.

6. Take time to think
In 1995, he founded a management laboratory in Colorado.

7. Always deliver
He has served as a senior executive at CNN International.

8. Get the right people
He frequently contributes to Harvard Business Review, Fortune and other publication.

9. Make the right bets
His book, Built to Last, was on the Business Week best-seller list for more than six years.

10. Find your true calling
Good to Great, attained long-running positions on the New York Times best-seller lists.
