Distracted: Attention in the Digital Age

Never before has attention been such a precious resource. Four distinguished writers offer their perspectives on the state of distraction and what is at stake for everyone in an increasingly digitized world. From the psychological and creative benefits of attention to the threat of distraction to our sense of self, panelists will discuss what distinguishes distraction in our time and how we can address its place in contemporary life.

Please join us at The Grand Hall, NYU Global Center for Academic and Spiritual Life (238 Thompson Street, 5th Floor, NYC) for a discussion with Matthew B. Crawford (The World Beyond Your Head: Becoming an Individual in an Age of Distraction), Mark Edmundson (Why Teach?: In Defense of a Real Education), Winifred Gallagher (Rapt: Attention and the Focused Life), and David Mikics (Slow Reading in a Hurried Age).

Moderating will be Virginia Heffernan, New York Times Magazine columnist; Visiting Scholar at NYU; and author of the forthcoming Magic and Loss: The Pleasures of the Internet.
