In this activity, PLC members identify a shared high stakes objective they would like to make more accessible to their students. One teacher invites the other PLC members to observe as they conduct a lesson based on that objective. Observing teachers take notes about the strategies the teacher uses, and what strengths and challenges they see during the observation. Then, the PLC meets to discuss how to refine the lesson they observed, going over the notes and the formative data the teacher gathered after the lesson. Together, the PLC develops an adaptation of the lesson they observed, and another PLC member invites their team to watch this modified lesson. As before, the observers take notes about what they see, and at the next PLC meeting, the team compares formative assessment data and observations. After reviewing the outcomes of both observations, the PLC determines which version of the lesson they would like to use as a team the next time they teach this content. This PLC strategy allows everyone to develop best teaching practices with data as a foundation so students get the best possible chance at success.

1) What are some of the objectives my PLC is most likely to discuss for this strategy?

2) What kinds of formative assessments give me and my team members the clearest picture of what our students do and do not understand?

3) How can my colleagues and I motivate one another to continue meeting regularly, even when the year gets very busy? How can we make our PLC time something we look forward to?
