CN 89 and N&W 475: Trotting through Amish Country

The Strasburg Railroad has been a staple of steam preservation and operation in America for decades. An iconic fleet of wooden passenger coaches and locomotives of Canadian National, Norfolk & Western, and Great Western descent are synonymous with the famous Amish Community it operates through. In this feature presentation, we'll follow 89 and 475 along the "Road to Paradise" at many timeless locations!

Canadian National 89 was outshopped from the Canadian Locomotive Works in 1910 as Grand Trunk Western 1009 as part of the E-12 class. Now under control of the Canadian National Railroad in 1923, it was renumbered 89 and re-classed E-10-a. It spent most of its service career in Quebec, before being retired by the CN in in the late 1950s. F. Nelson Blount purchased the locomotive in 1961 and moved it to North Walpole, NH as an early member of the Steamtown U.S.A. collection. 89 changed hands one more time, being purchased by the Strasburg Railroad in 1972.

Norfolk & Western 475 was constructed by Baldwin Locomotives Works in June of 1906 as an M Class locomotive. Early in its career it hauled mainline coal trains, but was later relegated to local/branchline work as larger locomotives were produced by the N&W. This locomotive spent the rest of it's life in local service until being retired in 1956, after a fifty year career. It bounced between owners until 1990 when it was finally purchased by the Strasburg Railroad and has remained on property since.
