Formula 1000 Race Car Diffuser Fabrication Fiberglass Honeycomb Sandwich Composite Vacuum Bag
Detailed how-to-build a Formula 1000 race car rear diffuser, part of the underbody, undertray, or floor, using epoxy fiberglass honeycomb vacuum bag sandwich construction techniques, from building the buck or master pattern, laying up the shell, making and mounting the internal strakes, epoxy microballoon fillets or fairings, painting, and mounting on the car. Mostly timelapse photography.
Demonstrates cheap, low-budget vacuum bagging with ordinary household items and with commercial perf-ply and breather fabric.
A Diffuser is a key component of the aerodynamic downforce of a modern race car. It operates by decelerating the high-speed airflow under the floor of the car back down to the speed of the surrounding airflow. Decelerating the airflow requires applying a force toward the front of the car, which applies the equal and opposite reaction to the air under the floor, which in turn accelerates the airflow under the floor even more, generating more downforce using the Bernoulli Principle.
