Television went through huge changes in the 70s. Colour television became a permanent established fixture in television. Family sitcoms and rural oriented programs declined while more socially contemporary shows and sitcoms targeting a young, hip and urban audience became very popular. These are the top 10 TV shows of the 1970s.

10 #charliesangels - Charlie's Angels followed 3 beautiful women who work at a detective agency run by a mysterious man who gives instructions over the phone. They go undercover to solve the many cases that come their way. The show ran for 5 seasons from 1976 to 1981 and became a pop culture phenomenon selling millions of merchandise.

9 #thejeffersons - The Jeffersons is one of the most iconic tv shows ever made. About George and Louise Jefferson, an African American couple who move from Queens to Manhattan in New York after achieving big success in their dry cleaning business the show broke racial boundaries and influenced many sitcoms that came after it. it ran for 11 seasons from 1975 to 1985.

8 #thewaltons - The Waltons followed the life and hardships of the Walton family through the Great Depression and World War 2. The shows end sequence featuring the family saying goodnight to each other before drifting off to sleep became one of the most famous and parodied sequences in pop culture. "Goodnight, John-Boy" was one of the most popular catchphrases of the 1970s. The show ran for 9 seasons from 1972 to 1981.

7 #threescompany - Three's Company was about the misadventures of two women and a man pretending to be gay living in an apartment together along with their neighbours. Based on the British sitcom Man About the House the show was a huge hit in America, remaining in the top 10 highest rated shows for 6 years and the no.2 show for back to back years. It ran for 8 seasons from 1977 to 1983.

6 #maude - The second All In The Family spin off to make the top 10 after The Jeffersons. Maude followed the life of outspoken, liberal, middle aged, independent woman Maude Finley living in suburban Tackahoe, New York with her fourth husband. The show tackled many issues such as civil rights, racism, feminism and gender equality. It ran for 6 seasons from 1972 to 1978.

5 #laverneandshirley - Laverne and Shirley followed the misadventures of two single women in the 50s and 60s as they deal with dates, neighbours and each other. A spin off of Happy Days it became just as successful during its peak becoming the no.1 show on television during its third and fourth seasons. It ran for 8 seasons from 1976 to 1982.

4 #happydays - Happy Days follows the going ons of life in the 50s and early 60s for Wisconsin teenager Richie Cunningham, his family and his best friend Fonzie. While the show was never well received by critics it became wildly popular with viewers becoming the no.1 show on television during its 4th season. The show particularly the Fonzie character became a pop culture phenomenon. It became a brand and sold millions with of merchandise. Happy Days ran for 11 seasons from 1974 to 1984.

3 #mash - MASH was a comedy following the staff of a Korean War field hospital as they use humour and high jinks to keep their sanity in the face of the horror of war. While it was never the no.1 show during its run it is one of the most popular tv shows ever. Finishing in the top 10 for 9 years. It's final episode is the most watched television broadcast in American history and the most watched final episode and episode of a scripted series ever. It ran for 11 seasons from 1972 to 1983.

2 #sanfordandson - Sanford and Son followed an irascible junk dealer and widower who lives with his miserable son. Together they come up with various schemes to make money, only to have them hilariously backfire. The show was a huge ratings hit, finishing in the top 10 during its first season then for 3 more seasons became one of the top 3 shows on television. The show ran for 5 seasons from 1972 to 1977. In 2007 Time magazine included the show on its list of the "100 Best TV Shows of All Time".

1 #allinthefamily - All In The Family revolves around the life of a working class man, Archie Bunker and his family. After a lackluster first season it became a huge hit during the summer reruns and over the next 5 years it dominated television, becoming the no.1 show for 5 straight years. The show broke ground in it's depiction of issues previously considered unsuitable for a US sitcom to cover and is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential tv shows ever made. It ran for 9 seasons from 1971 to 1979.
