1851 Broadwood grand piano - Chopin

Artis Wodehouse describes and plays on an 1851 Broadwood grand piano she found at the Furniture Consignment Center, 3093 Shelburne Rd., Shelburne Vermont. The instrument is currently for sale. The piece Wodehouse performs is Chopin's Nocturne in F# Op. 15 No. 2.

Wodehouse describes the significance of the instrument in relation to Chopin (1810-1849). In the last year of his life, Chopin toured England and Scotland, and Broadwood provided him with grand pianos similar to the one in this video to use for his performances.

Broadwood was one of the most important piano makers of the late 18th through the 19th C. The company initiated technical improvements to the piano that contributed toward the piano's modern form. Broadwood is best known for the instrument it provided to Beethoven in 1818. This Broadwood was considered then to be the most advanced and powerful piano of its day, and was the instrument for which Beethoven wrote his Hammerklavier Sonata, Op. 106 and all his late works for piano.
