Tomshoo Trail Camera

Every once in a while, a product comes along that we are really pleased with. This, is one of those times. Tomshoo has done a good job with this one. At first, I wasn't sure about the unusual format of the LED screen and battery compartment. After using this camera for a couple of weeks now though, I really like it! It makes total sense to have a screen that you can view as you are trying to set up the camera. No more guessing about what the camera is looking at and wasting time with unusable footage.

We have had this camera in use every day and every night for 10 days using only 4 AA batteries and they are still going. With 8 AA batteries, you could leave this thing set up for a very long time. The box suggests 8 to 10 months which I think would be totally possible, given how little battery we have used in 10 days with only 4.

Set up and usage is super easy. Even if you have no previous experience with trail cameras, the manual is written well enough (there are a few language mistakes but the meaning is easy to understand) that you can get this camera set up and running in no time. There is also some really good information about trail cameras in general in the manual, so it is worth spending a little time reading it.

Night vision is really good. For our sample footage here (see video) we had the illumination set to medium intensity. With the ambient light from the city, it was too much light. Low would have been a better setting, probably.

Image quality is really good. We uploaded raw imagery from the camera to our review video and also a clip at the end that we did a little colour grading and exposure adjustment to. It really makes the video pop!

The only issue we foresee with this trail camera, is that it requires a remote to use. If that remotes gets lost (which is pretty likely when you are using these cameras in the forest etc) then what!? We have contacted the manufacturer to see if we can purchase subsequent remotes. We will update this review when we get a response...

If you are looking for a very good quality trail camera for a reasonable price (in the $100 range) this is a great option. Of course, you may get more features and better quality from a $5-800 trail camera, but this one does a pretty good job!
