Marriage Equality in NYC Gay Marriage Legalized and History is Made Johnny & Sebastian Get Married
Long time partners, Johnny and Sebastian participate in a landmark historic event, joining thousands of other couples at City Hall on July 24th 2011 to receive the first marriage licenses ever issued for same sex couples.
We had been dating for about 5 years, and decided to get engaged in 2010. Our wedding was due to take place in Mexico 2012. But as luck would have it, gay marriage became legalized in 2011. So we jumped at the opportunity to take part in the first issuances of marriage licenses in the state of New York. It was a really remarkable and unforgettable experience.
There was such a sense of excitement in the air. Thousands of couples and their loved ones were there, as well as well wishers, the media, and also a good number of protestors. A group of volunteers with large colorful umbrellas, came to shield the gay couples who were standing in line waiting for their turn to receive a license.
Personally, we don't consider this our anniversary date. But we felt so incredibly fortunate to be there to experience this moment. We don't take for granted the generations of other gay couples who came before us who would have killed to have that experience. When we were waiting in line, we were standing beside some couples who had been together for 30+ years. It was such a moving and life changing experience to share this time with them and with the rest of the city.

My purpose for this channel is share my story as a proud gay Asian American husband and father of two amazing boys. I hope to specifically reach out to gay asian men who struggle with coming out, and also more broadly to anyone who feels unloved because they fear they will never be accepted for living their truth and for being who they really are. In sharing my stories of coming out, dating, marriage, fatherhood and all the ups and downs that go on in my daily life, I hope to be the gay asian male role model I never had growing up.
I consider myself to be blessed and exceptionally lucky, because my life really could have gone in a different direction had I allowed doubts and shame take over. My struggle with finding my own identity as an asian man in a society that largely glosses over us and deems us invisible is one that many of you can relate to. So I hope to create a page where through kinship, people can collectively heal and work on loving themselves.
