On this day in history, the first Harry Potter movie hit theaters. While J. K. Rowling’s first Harry Potter book sold over 120M copies, there were concerns Rowling’s demand for an all-British cast in the movie wouldn’t resonate with American audiences. Nevertheless, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone would go on to gross over $1B at the box office worldwide. There would be seven movie and book sequels to follow, in addition to an empire of toys, games, merchandise, and even theme parks. To date, the Harry Potter franchise has generated over $30B in sales.
