Volkswagen has finally released the production look of the ID.4 full-electric utility. The ID.3 compact hatchback is already for sale in Europe and that car has not been confirmed for North America. This ID.4 will be the first of the ID cars to come to our shores in the summer of 2021, however the United States will get it starting earlier in 2021. This new model will be sold in Europe and China as well. In fact the ID.4 is to be produced in Europe for the first year, so supply will be limited but once production starts at the Chattanooga Tennessee facility for the 2022 model year, the supply will be readily available. This new MEB platform is the basis for 75 all-electric vehicles across the VW Group by 2029. The ID.4 is a compact utility that has a flowing shape, a very slippery design for optimal aerodynamic. The first models to arrive will be RWD and AWD here in Canada.
The battery is 82kWh but the usable space is 77 kWh of energy and has a range of up to 520 km on the European cycle and over 400km using the North American standard. There is a heat pump for thermal management and battery longevity. It is installed below the passenger compartment, which guarantees a low centre of gravity. The electric drive motor, positioned at the rear axle, generates 150 kW 204 HP , with accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds. The AWD version has a second motor up front and will produce an additional 101hp, for a total output of 302hp. This model will make a run to 60 in5.8 seconds. On a DC fast charger, the ID.4 will go from 5%-80% in 38 minutes at speeds up to 125kW.There is 21 centimeters of ground clearance, the E-SUV is capable gentle off-road terrain.
Lighting is the new chrome and the IQ.Light LED matrix headlights welcome drivers with swiveling lens modules and generate an intelligently controlled main beam. These headlights have been paired with the new 3D LED tail light clusters. Inches underline the vehicle’s character.
Inside there is room available in the vehicle in the next category up. Depending on the rear seat backrest’s position, the luggage compartment boasts a capacity from 543 to 1,575 liters, similar to the existing North American Tiguan.
Unfortunately there are no physical buttons and switches. It is based on two displays – The instrument cluster is a standard 5.3-inch unit with an optional 12-inch screen. The infotainment screens are either 10-inches or 12-inches and features wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto plus wireless charging. The new ID.Light – a narrow light strip under the windscreen – offers an augmented reality head-up display, like navigation arrows telling drivers to turn are projected onto the road surface in exactly the right lane.
VW Canada claims this is the right product for a cold climate with the battery heat pump, pre-heating ability for the cabin, heated seats and steering wheel and a heated windshield for cold mornings.
There is no pricing yet for the Canadian market, the US is opening up orders now and estimates for that market are roughly $40,000 USD, so place your bets on the Canadian starting price, my guess is just under $45,000 to qualify for the federal EV rebate. There will be RWD and AWD available right away when this goes on sale in Canada and only two trims, called Pro and Pro with Statement package.
So there it is the all-electric ID.4 with more ID cars to follow. US buyers can order now, Canada will get this car next summer and for 2022, when US production starts, there will be plenty of volume to meet demand.
