Royal Navy Engineers Measured a Captured E-Boat Hull — The Quality Was Better Than Their Own

When Constructor Commander Charles Doust put a caliper to the hull of S-204, the numbers didn't make sense. Thinner plating. Closer frames. Steel so clean it looked like aircraft components. And welds so perfect, a veteran shipyard worker said he'd never seen anything like it outside pressure vessel work.
The Germans weren't just building faster boats. They were building smarter ones. And the British had been losing the Channel at night, in part, because of it.
This is the examination that forced the Royal Navy to quietly rewrite its own construction standards — and admit, in a classified report, that the enemy had outengineered them.
