Note: If you have a wire in the *OB slot (could be used as W2, Y2, O, B etc), when setting up Nest Thermostat, you must declare that wire according to its function (e.g W2)

ALWAYS try your best to match one for one from your original wiring to the Nest. Here are the connectors explained:

RED=Powers (normally) and goes into Rh or Rc and sometimes has a jumper to connect the two (if your original had a jumper, nest needs one to)
Green=Fan (normally) and should go into G
Yellow=Cool/Air (A/C) (normally) and usually goes into Y1
Blue=Common (normally) and is used for things that have home automation and goes into C
White=Heat (normally) central heating unit can also need a black wire and you might also have a heat pump, but white goes into W1 normally
Orange=heat pump (normally) and goes into O/B above Rc
Black=staged heat (normally) and goes into * (star connector) also black normally goes into the * Star connector

Your system’s wiring may or may not need to use the Nest thermostat’s star connector, so you should always use the compatibility checker to get a custom wiring diagram before connecting any wires to the star connector.

Nest Learning Thermostats and the Nest Thermostat E use the star connector a bit differently and support different wires and system features.

This might help as well, here is a graphic of what I typed below
