With salamander crucibles costing upwards of US$60, here is a simple way of smelting gold dust and nuggets to make a single ingot. You can shape the hole in the potato to the shape of ingot that you want to produce.
There is an old-timer method of removing the mercury from a gold amalgam using a potato but this is a different process that does not involve hazardous substances. However we still don't recommend that the potato is eaten!
