Austrians were the best in alpine skiing slalom at the 28th Winter Universiade 2017, Almaty,

Almaty 7 of February. Alpine skiing. Slalom. Men:

Richard Leigeb (Austria) – 1:55.16 (56.56+58.60)
Bernhard Binderitsch (Austria) – 1:56.44 (56.61+59.83)
Tobias Kogler (Austria) – 1:56.57 (57.06+59.51)

Competitions in men’s slalom were bright end of the Universiade in alpine skiing. Good sunny day today gathered in the stands, "Shymbulak", perhaps a record number of viewers for the whole days of the competition.

In the start protocol were 86 participants but uneasy track and mistakes of athletes allowed to allow reaching the finish line in both attempts only 38 of them.

After the first run the leader was the Austrian Richard Leitgeb (56.56 sec.). And, in spite of the tough competition that ensued at the slope in the second attempt, his highest position in the final minutes he managed to defend.

The second was the compatriot of Leigeb Bernhard Binderitsch who was behind from the champion for 1.28 seconds. On the third place was another Austrian athlete Tobias Kogler (+1.41).



- I was very confident today for various reasons. First, the preparation for competitions was very good. Second, we are in very good physical conditions after tough training processes. Third, we have a very good and strong team. From the beginning I was confident in the victory. Everything depends on me and I did that – said after the end of the tournament Richard Leigeb.

- Today was the last day of the tournament. It was our last chance to show ourselves at the Games. I am happy that we won medals. During the competitions I did not have any time to think about medals. I was focused on the race-said Bernhard Binderitsch.

For Tobias Kogler it was a matter of honor to win these competitions:

- Before that I was on the fourth place in alpine ski combination and after that I had an aim to win a medal from Kazakhstan. Now I have a bronze medal. I am happy-said Tobias Kogler.

Richard Leigeb also told that he came to the Universiade on the money of his family. This victory is very important for him. However he hopes that after this success sponsors will pay attention on him and all expenses will be payed back.

What was the most difficult at this tournament, athletes said-the weather.

- In Austria we do not have so much snow and it is not that cold-said Richard.

All three athletes are for the first time in Kazakhstan. But they hope that it is not their last time. They liked the Athletes Village, slopes of “Shymbulak” and the city of Almaty. Tobias Kogler also learnt some Kazakh words:

- A few words about the organization of the tournament. We just had one problem. We could not see other competitions-speed skating, figure skating, ice hockey. We did not manage to get well acquainted with the city. But everything else was at the highest level. Rakhmet! - Tobias said in conclusion.
