China’s Belt and Road initiative is important to its ‘approach to global domination’

Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson has called for the Victorian government to cancel the “quite dangerous” Belt and Road deal it has with communist China.

Victoria’s engagement in the Belt and Road initiative sees China investing billions of dollars into the state's infrastructure program, while importing Chinese workers to help with the development of the project.

Ms Henderson said the initiative is a “really important part of China’s approach to global domination,” and its foundation in Victoria is “not in our national interest”.

As a result of the deal the Victorian government has experienced a “dramatic escalation” of its net debt, with ANZ predicting by mid-2021 debt could reach almost $90 billion which is close to 19 per cent of its gross state product.

Ms Henderson told Sky News host Peta Credlin there have been a lot of “motherhood statements about silk road cooperation” from the Victorian government claiming a “great alliance” between China and the state.

“This is very much in China’s interest, it’s a key part of their foreign policy (and) it’s a key part of their economic strategy”.
